Getting started
What Reef needs
A Jellyfin server that you run or have an account on. Jellyfin 10.9 or later is recommended. Reef does not include any music and has no account of its own; your Jellyfin username and password are all you sign in with. If you are new to Jellyfin, the Jellyfin documentation covers installing a server.
Connecting to your server
On first launch Reef looks for servers on your Wi-Fi and lists the ones it finds. If yours is not listed, enter its address the way you would in a browser, for example http://192.168.1.20:8096 on your home network, or https://jellyfin.example.com if your server is published on the internet. Reef tries HTTPS first and falls back to HTTP for addresses without a scheme.
Away from home
Reef works with any address your phone can reach. Many people use a VPN such as Tailscale or WireGuard. If Reef shows a connection banner while you are away, check that the VPN is on; Reef keeps your downloads and your cached library available offline in the meantime.
Frequently asked
Reef cannot find my server or my speakers
Discovery needs the Local Network permission. Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and make sure Reef is on. Also check that the phone and the server or speaker are on the same Wi-Fi network; guest networks and some mesh setups isolate devices from each other. A server can always be added by typing its address.
Which speakers does Reef play to?
AirPlay and Bluetooth through the system route picker, always. From the speaker button in Now Playing, Reef also casts directly to WiiM and other Linkplay devices, to Sonos, and to other DLNA/UPnP renderers on your network. When you cast, the speaker streams straight from your server, so playback continues while your phone sleeps, and the queue you see on the phone is the queue on the speaker.
Does Reef work offline?
Yes. Albums and playlists you download stay on the device until you remove them. Music you have played recently is also cached and plays without a connection while it remains in the cache. Your library index is stored locally, so browsing works offline too.
What quality does Reef play?
By default, the original file over Wi-Fi and a 320 kbps transcode over cellular. Both, and the quality used for downloads, can be changed in Settings → Playback. Transcoding is done by your server. Lossless and hi-res files play at their original quality when you choose Original.
Volume normalisation and the equaliser
Normalisation uses the ReplayGain or loudness values stored by your server; if a track has none, it plays at its natural level. The ten-band equaliser and its presets apply to playback on the phone and over AirPlay and Bluetooth. Speakers you cast to apply their own settings; for WiiM speakers, Reef can choose the speaker's built-in presets.
Siri, Shortcuts and CarPlay
Say "Play my favourites in Reef", "Shuffle my library in Reef", or ask Siri to skip and pause. Reef's actions also appear in the Shortcuts app. CarPlay support is built and will switch on in an update once Apple has approved the app for the CarPlay audio programme.
Where is my data, and how do I delete it?
Everything Reef stores lives on your phone: sign-in details in the Keychain, plus the library index, cache, downloads and preferences. Signing out removes the sign-in and the library data; deleting the app removes everything. Reef sends nothing to us. See the privacy policy.
Something looks wrong on my screen
Reef supports Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency. If a screen is hard to read or a control is hard to reach, please tell us which screen and which iOS accessibility settings you use. Accessibility problems are treated as bugs.
Reporting a problem
Email support@reef-media.app with what happened and what you expected. If Reef shows an error, a screenshot of it helps. If playback stops or a sync fails, the time it happened lets us match it against your server's logs, which you can read in the Jellyfin dashboard.
